I am an interior designer and visual merchandiser based in NYC and have been for about 5 years. I love the way design can be used to affect emotions-to bring calm after a long day, to bring excitement to a gathering, to bring people together. There is nothing more rewarding to me than walking into a space, seeing the possibilities that live there and then turning it into a reality. I can't say that I have a favorite design style. Who wants to choose between the clean streamlined look of mid-century modern and the elegant detail of Federalist? Not me--and thankfully I don't have to. The "Christine Schwalm style" is flexible, liveable and purposeful. Whether that means Eames or Phyfe is up to you.
Why hire an interior designer? Put it this way, I could probably figure out how to do my taxes each year, but the risk of making a very big, very expensive mistake is much higher than if I hired a professional to do it for me. And while there's no such thing as a "design audit," the risk of you making an expensive mistake is much greater than if you allow me to handle it for you. You do what you do. I'll give you a beautiful place to come home to.
