There's a scene in that movie "Along Came Polly" where Ben Stiller's character calculates the amount of time he spends removing and replacing the decorative pillows on the bed over the course of his lifetime and then promptly freaks out. I imagine most men feel this way, but pillow "murder" is hardly the answer. There is a better way.
While looking through this month's Traditional Home, I noticed these 2 beds and took note of the way they sensibly addressed the pillow situation. Here they used 3 Euro shams in a decorative fabric layered neatly in front of 2 standard pillows. It looks like the regular pillows are wearing shams, but they could easily be dressed in some attractive pillowcases. You've got pattern, interest and a little height--without creating an avalanche of pillows. For a traditional style poster bed, this is about as minimal as you can do while staying true to the look. Because even though I'm a woman and a designer, I think a few less pillows are a good way to go.
