How to: selling your item on craigslist10/12/2009 As I start to think more seriously about next month's impending move (yikes!), I decided to sell my dining room. I had gotten a great deal a little while back through Ethan Allen but I never really loved it. Besides, I don't want to limit my apartment search based on furniture I'm only lukewarm over. So, after considering my options, I decided to brave craigslist to try to sell the dining room pieces. I know, posting on craigslist invites all sorts of crazies into your life. But it's the easiest and cheapest way to sell something. Not all posts are created equal and, in an effort to close the deal as quickly as possible, I did some research on how to put the best one online. Here is a list of helpful information. *Be fair with pricing. If you bought a sofa 5 years ago, don't try to sell it for $100 less than what you paid. Look at similar items posted to get an idea of what you can charge. Be sure to list a price and not just "best offer". *Include detailed dimensions *Add clear, well lit, pictures. Most people won't bother to look at a post if it doesn't have them. Try to take pictures in natural light and, if there is damage, include a photo. It's better to add a picture of your item (rather than a picture from a company website) because buyers want to see the piece they're getting--not what a new one would look like. *Be sure to list the best way to get in touch (most people prefer email) and the times you are available to show/sell the items posted. Respond quickly to inquiries--no posting and then leaving town for a week. *If you're selling a branded/designer item (something that normally sells at a premium), include a picture of the company stamp or mark showing it's authentic. *You will get some ridiculous offers (I sure did). Try to keep your sense of humor. Be willing to take a little less money if you come across a decent, fair-minded, non-flake. You can't put a price on sanity or safety.
